Update: Columbia University Shifts Stance on Pro-Palestinian Encampment Deadline
Columbia University has adjusted its stance regarding a deadline imposed on pro-Palestinian demonstrators to vacate their encampment, according to AFP reports. The office of Columbia University President Minouche Shafik released a statement at 11:07 pm (0307 GMT Friday), withdrawing a previously set midnight deadline for the dismantling of a sizable tent camp housing approximately 200 students.
“The discussions have made headway and are proceeding as scheduled,” the statement conveyed. “Both sides have articulated their respective demands.”
Furthermore, the statement refuted claims suggesting the involvement of New York City police on campus. “This assertion is inaccurate,” it clarified.
A student, known only as Mimi, shared with AFP her seven-day presence at the encampment. “We’re labeled as terrorists, as violent. Yet, our sole tool is our voices,” she emphasized.
